Ewave Jetboard from China

We first reported on the Ewave Jetboard in 2019 and have continued to monitor the Chinese eSurfboard ever since.

Ewave & E-SURFER

For 2021, we had considered adding the Ewave to our store ourselves. We were looking for a sporty jetboard and took a close look at Ewave, Jetsurf and the Radinn Carve and had intensive discussions with the manufacturers. In the end, we decided on the Radinn Carve. You can find a few videos about these boards on the E-SURFER Youtube channel.

With the Jetsurf, we were bothered by the time-consuming procedure for assembly and disassembly. Because of the hollow shell, the entire board has to be checked for moisture every time. That was too time-consuming for us. In addition, the focus at Jetsurf is clearly on the gasoline-powered jetboards, which are out of the question for us.

At Ewave, we could not get comfortable with the business methods. There are no official company email addresses and no address of the factory on a website. At least we could not find one. Communication is only via WhatsApp and Gmail email addresses. The main contact is in Canada, but the Ewave board is developed and built in China.

They have distributors in the USA and Spain for the Ewave Jetboard. We were offered Ewave distribution for German speaking countries in 2020, but for the reasons mentioned above this was too risky for us. For us, support and service is important (because we want to be able to pass this on to our customers) and for this you need a fixed contact person that you can also grasp. I don’t want to rule out the possibility that we might have another conversation at the end of 2021. But then only with a company website and official email addresses. The current websites are made by the distributors.

Ewave Jetboard

The EWAVE Jetboard was launched at the end of 2019 after 4 years of development by a Chinese company owned by a person named “Tiger” (we couldn’t find out the real name). EWAVE produces all the components themselves. Although it is a Chinese jetboard, it doesn’t seem to be a copy, but instead offers some unique features. For example, a new shock-absorbing material called D30 has been licensed for the foot pads. The fins are from FCS (making them easily replaceable) and came with optional wheels that could be attached to the board itself to easily take it to the beach. The wheels were part of the travel kit, which also included a board bag.

The idea of “Tiger” was to build a lightweight electric jetboard with enough power to compete with gasoline-powered surfboards. The top speed was 56 km/h. There were 2 models available. The V2-6000 model has 6,000 RMP (revolutions per minute), while the V2-5000 model…. (I guess you can get it). The 5000 model sold for around 9,500 EUR including VAT and plus shipping and the 6000 model sold for around 10,650 EUR including VAT and plus shipping. The 5000 model reached 50 km/h and had different colors. Both models promised a power of 10kW. Later the 5000 model was discontinued.

The 2.5kW battery had a weight of 10kg and was supposed to charge in 2 hours to provide up to 30 minutes of riding time depending on conditions and weight of the rider. The battery had 2 soft-release handles for easy transport and came in a metal case that was supposed to be fireproof, according to EWAVE information. It ran at 48 V and 56 Ah. According to Dana (the distributor from the USA), they planned to have a huge battery inventory in 2019, so spare batteries should be available. The price for such a spare battery was about 3,300 EUR including VAT plus shipping. As an accessory, there was also a TUBE for 800 EUR, which was supposed to make riding easier for beginners and children. This was already known from Jetsurf.

Technical specs

The carbon fiber Ewave Jetboard had dimensions of 176 x 61 x 18 cm and weighed 30 kg plus the 10 kg battery and was supposed to carry riders up to 100 kg. The company was also planning a hybrid e-foil jetboard for the next year, using existing boards and components. The idea was to take out the engine and replace it with a mast and wing, where the engine would be at the bottom of the mast. I was looking forward to seeing this live, but unfortunately delivery kept getting delayed.

We were promised a test board for September 2019, but the date kept getting pushed back over a year. The Hydrofoil option was also not available in stores except for a few prototypes. Later we were told to wait for a new model in January 2021, but we gave up sometime in February.

2021 models

Even though not many Ewave Jetboards were sold in 2020, the feedback from users was not necessarily bad. There were technical problems, but the distributors did a good job and supplied the customers with spare parts. A new generation is now expected for 2021, which should have the early troubles behind it.

The model name of the Ewave Jetboard still speaks of the V2-6000, so we suspect that the board is not really new, but only the problematic components that have been improved. It is however 2 kg heavier. You can now see the Hydrofoil option for 3,000 EUR in the distributors’ stores in addition to the Tube. The boards are still available in green and blue.
