In our Mertek electric surfboard review we will have a closer look at the second generation of the low cost electric jetboard which was originally called EasySurf or eSurf S1.
Our partner Jetboard Limited has worked with the team in Shenzhen, China to improve the jetboard. Here is what we found.
In our original article about the EasySurf “eSurf S1 Review – A cheap electric surfboard alternative?” we explained (including a video) about how the now called Mertek is positioned.
It is designed as a family & rental board for riders below 70kg.
If you are heavier than that you will probably not enjoy it as you would never reach planning. But in exchange the board is with 3,000 EUR plus tax and shipping indeed the cheapest electric surfboard in the market.
Riders below 70 kg can reach speeds of 26 km/h.
The board is 230 cm long, has a total weight of 27 kg and the board is inflatable and foldable which makes it easy to transport.
The run time is about 20 minutes at full speed which translates into the usual 30-40 minutes in normal use.
You can compare the board in our electric surfboard comparison with other boards.
This Mertek electric surfboard review article is focussing on the changes and improvements of the Mertek vs. the Easysurf.
As mentioned above the Jetboard Limited team under Wayne has as the European distributor for Mertek products worked closely with the Mertek team in Shenzhen, China to improve the second generation.
Here is Wayne’s feedback to E-Surfer:
To summarise the EasySurf was a good, cheap, beginner and children’s board but like any first generation board it had some minor improvements that were needed.
This will always happen with any first generation board regardless of price.
The Mertek appears to be problem free at the moment and the improvements are great. As far as value for money the Mertek is a great board for children, beginners and people 70kgs and less.
It’s proven to be very popular for rentals because it’s so easy to use, relatively safe and loads of fun.
The great thing about the Mertek team is that they still continue to take feedback on board and are continuously looking at more ways to improve the board.
The Mertek is now going to be selling for 3,000 EUR which is more than the EasySurf was but with upgrades and improvements comes at a higher price and this is unavoidable.
The Merteks have to be ordered in bulk and Jet Board Limited will have stock arriving soon but in Europe this is just in time for winter. However we will be stocked up for next summer.
Generally these boards are sold before we even receive them so don’t hesitate to place your orders with us now to avoid disappointment.
Jet Board Limited covers all guarantees, repairs and maintenance for our customers so you can have piece of mind that you have a European dealer and are in good hands.
The old EasySurf remote used to lose signal with the antenna when riden by a bigger, heavier person and when the remote got wet. It was random and hard to predict or analyse and nothing could be done to change this.
The Easysurfs worked great in fresh water with smaller lighter people but did not last long or handle sea water and bigger,/heavier people.
When the back of the board went under water it lost signal and stopped working. It would start working again but only when it decided it wanted to. When I rode it, it was fine most of the time but it seems the Chinese board did not like to cooperate with Germans, Russians or Czechs 😉
The new Mertek has the antenna in the front so never lose a signal, a slightly improved remote, handles on the sides and a cooler new look. That’s all it really needed. We have the first two boards in Spain and are testing them and they appear to be great. We are working on and testing a few very minor little things though.
So far it seems to be our most popular board for rentals and the favourite at our events. We have a large order coming soon but unfortunately it’s only for winter. With extra shipping costs and customs charges the price will end up selling at 3,000 and not 2,500 anymore.
