In Our Mellow Board review we will find out if the Mellow Drive is the best electric skateboard conversion kit you can buy.

Johannes and Kilian from Hamburg, Germany, funded Mellowboards successfully at Kickstarter on June 11th 2015.

On September 2nd 2017 all backers had received their boards and now the Mellow Drive as well as the Mellow Board Surfer (Longboard) and the Mellow Board Cruiser (Short Board) are available for sale on the Mellowboards website.

We had the chance to ride Mellowboards on several occasions, but for the Mellow Board Review we got the Mellow Board Surfer and Mellow Board Cruiser for full 2 weeks of testing.

The Mellow Drive (conversion kit without deck) sells for 1,699 EUR and is therefore double the price compared to some other kits such like the Onan X2.

But is is supposed to be the best electric skateboard conversion kit on the market so far. Let’s see if the product „made in Germany“ can hold this promise.

We summarised our findings in our 14 minutes Mellow Board review video:

Let’s start with some technical specs:

• The weight including battery is 8.6 lbs or 3.9 kg
• Swappable battery weight is 2.2 lbs or 1 kg
• The motor drive has the dimensions 14 x 7 x 2.5 inches or 366 x 174 x 59 mmm
• 2 in wheel motors
• maximum speed of 25 mph or 40 km/h (in our test we reached 26 mph or 42 km/h !!!!)
• water and dust proof (IP65)
• range of 7.5 - 10 miles or 12 - 15 km
• charges in 3.5 hours or 45 minutes with a fast charger

The Kit comes with the Mellow Drive, Battery Pack, Mellow Remote, Charger and Manual.

A free Mellow App is available for iOS and Android and monitors charge, range, speed and distance and can change into 4 riding modes.

The Mellow remote controls the speed with a slider and has just 1 button which makes it easy to handle. An LED is showing the charging level and vibrations will you make aware if the battery runs low.

Extra batteries are available for 249 EUR.

If you watch our Mellow Board Review video you will see - we were quite excited. Our test rider Louis is still stoked by the speed!

The quality is very good and rides are very smooth and safe. Also the optional decks are awesome, but you can choose any deck you would like.

Even without the motors turned on it is a good longboard and easy to push.

You pay a lot, but you get a lot!

The only thing we were not able to test was the riding mode „endless ride“ as this mode is not available yet. In the endless ride mode you push the board to a certain speed and it keeps going …

We are looking forward to test this later.

If you watched our video review, you may have seen that we had some minor questions and were wondering about certain features.

Mellow reached out to us, answered them and explained the features further. Thanks!

So here is a little update:

• Remote started vibrating during the speedtest:
  • It's a safety feature, telling you that you are hitting really high speeds.
• Having to push once, bevor the motors can accelerate you:
  • Also a safety feature, wich is solving some problems, if you think about it:
    • No need for a "dead-man-switch", since the board won't take of if you accidentally hit the gas
    • The initial acceleration is the reason for most accidents newbies have
    • Plus this is an easy way to safe a lot of power, since the inertia is biggest, when standing still
• The endless ride feature will be released with the next big firmware update in a few weeks
• The strings you can see on the bottom of the deck aren't "just to look important", as we falsely assumed. 😉 BuddyBuddy is using the "AnchorCoreTechnology", wich is great for finetuning the characteristics of the deck.
