I’ve been watching the Awake Boards RÄVIK Jetboard models since 2018 and met with the Awake team 2019, 2020 and 2021 for product demonstrations and interviews. In July 2021 the team came by our store in Berlin with two boards for the RÄVIK Jetboard review. You can find the review report below.
In addition to the Rävik One, there are now three models with the RÄVIK S and RÄVIK 3. In the following I go into all models and describe my test rides.
But first to my last meeting. At the end of 2021, I interviewed CEO Daniel Aronsson for the last time at the Yachting Festival in Cannes, where Daniel showed me the latest news and the following video was created:
0:00 Rävik One
0:47 Rävik S
1:50 Shape and drive
3:41 Exchangeable contacts
4:22 Rävik 3
The RÄVIK 3 is the newest of the Awake Jetboards and combines the riding characteristics of the RÄVIK One with features of the sportier RÄVIK S. Daniel himself describes it as an optimized version of the RÄVIK One, which now allows more experienced jetboarders to perform radical maneuvers and high speeds.
The design in terms of colors and materials is very similar on all three jetboard models. A very technical, angular design in white with carbon fiber accents and the typical red lettering. The design is simple and functional and makes a very good qualitative impression.
The RÄVIK 3 is pleasant to ride. Unlike many other jetboards, you hardly feel any stalls, which is due to the large exposed jet inlet. Especially with the optional footstraps, you can’t complain about the carving ability and the acceleration is strong as well.
Since the Awake boards are not among the cheap jetboard models, the quality is, as you would expect, very good. Everything makes a great impression. The remote control is also high quality and feels good in the hand. The display is bright enough. It takes some getting used to that you accelerate with your thumb. So far, I only knew this from Onean. But since the trigger was very smooth, my thumb had no signs of fatigue. Driving the RÄVIK 3 was fun in any case.
I’m still planning a full review of the RÄVIK S, but here are the highlights already. Most of the components, like the remote, battery and foot-straps are identical on all RÄVIK models. However, the foot-straps are recommended for this smaller and narrower board.
The board has little volume, but had no problems to accelerate me with 90 kg rider weight. The short board can be carved almost like a wakeboard. A super board, but more about that in my future test report.
Awake from Sweden is presenting first time the Awake RÄVIK S Jetboard today at boot 2020 in Dusseldorf, Germany. The new board shall provide more performance for advanced riders.
We had just recently interviewed Awake Brand Manger Gustav Kjellberg about the success of the Awake RÄVIK in December 2019 – see bellow- and just 1 month later they were announcing the new Awake RÄVIK S Jetboard. The new Awake RÄVIK_S Jetboard will co-exist next to the current One model, but is more performance-oriented according to the Swedish manufacturer.
Please enjoy the following video interview where Gustav is presenting the new boards.
The RÄVIK S is a smaller more agile jet-board with a slimmer and tighter rear which enables the rider to carve more aggressively and make tighter turns. This approach is similar with what Radinn is trying to achieve with the new hull they will introduce later this year, but did not show at boot 2020. Awake did present the board at boot as you can see in the video above.
The S model is more performance oriented designed for adrenaline hungry athletes while the original RÄVIK is kind of the allrounder which is easier to ride. The new board has the same modular approach as the original. board. This makes it easier to maintain as you don’t need to send in the entire electric surfboard in case you have a support issue. This does also mean that you can use the same battery and remote control for both boards.
Mass production planned for end of April 2020. Other than explained in the video the price of the RÄVIK_S is 16,990 EUR plus VAT and the price of original RÄVIK went down to 15,990 EUR excluding VAT and shipping. The technical specifications (other than the dimensions of the hull) are the same.
The Awake RÄVIK S is offering 4 riding modes and a riding time of 20 to 45 minutes. The engine has a maximum power of 11kW and the battery shall charge in 80 minutes. Maximum speed is 56 km/h or 30 knots at a weight of 35 kg including the battery. The order deposit is 1,000 EUR and the package includes:
* Additional battery packs are available
Here are some quotes from the Awake Boards executives:
The original RÄVIK is a great product that caters to everyone who is looking for a great time on the water, no matter previous experience. What we are doing with the RÄVIK_S is to offer a more playful attribute to this experience, with higher responsiveness and tighter carving.
says Daniel Aronsson, the CEO of Awake.
They achieve this more aggressive riding style through a new hull design, which has been developed through rigorous hydrodynamic testing at the Rolls Royce testing facilities in Karlstad, Sweden, according to the company.
The RÄVIK_S offers the rider a sharper, more dynamic experience with unmatched carving capabilities. Thanks to a complete redesign of the hull, the RÄVIK_S is made for the adrenaline hungry water sports enthusiasts who are looking for next-level performance within the electric surfboard segment.
says Philip Werner, the Innovation Officer at Awake.
The new board has its world premier at the boot show which is in Dusseldorf (Germany) from January 18th to 26th. The company will produce a few beta units before they plan mass production in “late spring” 2020.
Awake Boards from Linhamn in Sweden is finishing their first year since delivering to customers. Time for an interview with Awake’s Brand Manager Gustav Kjellberg to recap the first season.
We had the chance to interview Gustav’s colleague Daniel Aronsson at the beginning of 2019 when Awake was exhibiting at the boot show in Dusseldorf. Find the video interview with product demonstration further below.
The first boards for the season were shipped in at the end of January. The delivery target is three figures, and we have been lucky enough to see zero returns.
The majority of the boards head down to our retailer network in Europe, the most common end destination this season is definitely the Med. Still, thanks to Awake Boards battery certification, which enables global air freight, RÄVIK’s have been shipped all across the globe!
A large majority of our sales go through the authorized retailer network, which is our general business model. We, of course, sell direct as well, but only to markets that haven’t been activated by retailers yet.
Our retailers are either luxury goods and/or water toys-focused, or straight up tenders & toys-oriented yachting industry professionals.
All authorized retailers get service training after the delivery of their first demo configurations and stock units. Thanks to our modular system, service needs are very low, all that is needed for regular maintenance is a freshwater rinse. When bad luck hits the user, we offer a complimentary 12-month manufacturer’s warranty, which basically covers everything short of opening up and tampering with the battery or the engine.
The majority yes. We do have a few “lighter” partnerships, which we are very grateful for as well.
Customer service and fast response is key, and this is something we are very proud to deliver on.
Presence is key; you have to be able to provide service and knowledge in real life, not just over the phone or via email. I have over 100 travel days this year, and I absolutely love it!
It’s hard to measure one simple success during 2019. I would rather say that reaching our goals in sales and at the same time keeping up with deliveries is great. The industry as a whole has seen a lot of broken promises in its young life, and that is one of the things that we are changing.
As stated above, a big issue in the industry has been the lack of product delivery, and that is a bad reputation that we are currently changing. Another big thing, which I am glad has been raised by stakeholders across the industry during 2019, e-surfer.com included, is battery safety. We’ve focused a majority of our development on this particular aspect, and keeping a tight manufacturing, assembly and quality control, we provide our clients with a CE-certified, reliable, premium-quality product — a product which we hope and believe will push the reliability of the whole industry forward.
Awake is at its core a development company, and after the success of the RÄVIK, I believe the future is very bright indeed!
Anytime, I would love to come visit you!
Well, we are very much looking forward to test the Awake electric surfboard and hope that spring will come soon. If you have further questions to Gustav, please ask them in our forum at: forum.e-surfer.com
I had the chance to get a AWAKE electric surfboard demo at boot 2019 from Awake COO Daniel Aronsson. Awake started shipping end of last year to some beta users and is now ramping up production for new orders.
See the full presentation of Daniel in the video here:
We could have a closer look to the remote control which is kind of unique. It has a nice display and the throttle is controlled only by your thumb.
It felt good in our hand and the throttle is convenient.
Overall the board made a good impression with high quality components which you would expect for 18.900 EUR plus VAT. With a top speed of 56 km/h it should be fast enough for most of us and according to Daniel you would be able to tow a wakeboarder.
A claim we so far only know from CURF jetboards.
With 179 cm length it is currently the shortest board in our comparison. The board is 61 cm wide and 16 cm thick.
For the AWAKE electric surfboard demo at boot the team installed a small pool to showcase the power of the board and that it is actually working and ready for shipment.
The total weight is 35 kg (including the battery which is 16 kg) and ships with a board bag with huge wheels in order to transport it to the beach. Check out the AWAKE electric surfboard demo video above to see all details.
