The figures are manufacturer's specifications, usually under ideal conditions. The speed and distance in particular may vary slightly depending on the rider's weight and riding style.

Elektro-Skateboard-Übersicht-2017

In wheel motors, as the name suggests, are directly inside the roller and cannot be seen from the outside. Other motors are external and drive the rollers with a belt (like the chain on a motorcycle). The list is regularly updated and expanded.

Whether you choose one with an in-wheel motor or with a belt is a matter of taste. The advantage of the in-wheel motor is that the wheels run freely and the electric longboard rides like a normal longboard when the motor is switched off. In contrast, the motor with belt has more grip. This means that it is superior to the in-wheel motor when accelerating (and even more importantly) when braking.

Electric skateboard penalty

What penalties can you expect if you are caught riding an electric skateboard in traffic?

In March 2015, the Straubing police pulled a 33-year-old electric skateboarder out of traffic. He had been riding the electric skateboard on the sidewalk and it was discovered that the electric longboard can reach speeds of up to 35 km/h with 800 watts. As a result, a report was issued for a violation of the licensing regulations and an offense under the compulsory insurance law.

Elektro-Skateboard-Polizei

In April 2017, the police in Bad Schönborn (Uberstadt-Weiher) also reported arresting a 34-year-old electric skateboarder who was riding on the sidewalk. As the vehicle was neither insured nor licensed for use on public roads, the person caught now faces charges of violating the compulsory insurance law and driving without a license.

Fines of up to EUR 1,600 have been described in forums. In addition, electric skateboards were temporarily confiscated but later handed back.

The charges are as follows:

- Driving without a license
- Driving without insurance cover
- Driving without a license

Electric skateboard police

One user in the forums described how he was stopped by the police because he had overtaken a moped at 35 km/h. So honestly - it's your own fault.

Of course, every police officer reacts differently. The reaction ranges from criminal charges to curious questions and the request to be allowed to ride it once.

Elektro-Skateboard-Polizei-1

Even if riding in public parks, on traffic-calmed roads, on forest paths or even in public skate parks is not officially permitted, electric skateboarders are often tolerated here. It is important to be defensive and considerate of other road users. So don't speed past a passer-by at 30 km/h with a distance of only 50 cm.

Look for a quiet spot in parks or traffic-calmed zones. Here in Berlin, the police are quite relaxed. I've had contact with the police 3 times on the E-Board so far. Once I came to a halt just one meter from the friendly officer. Everything was easy.

But electric skateboards have also been temporarily confiscated in Berlin. However, the users were stopped right in front of the Brandenburg Gate or on the crowded Friedrichstrasse between the tourists. So who is surprised.

Electric skateboards where are you allowed to ride?

In Germany without the electric skateboard street license, as mentioned, only on private property. But there is another way:

In Austria, electric skateboards are classified as "vehicle-like children's toys" and may therefore be used on play or residential streets, on sidewalks, pedestrian zones and in specially designated fun parks. Even on sidewalks, as long as the boards cannot get onto the street and do not disturb passers-by. It does work.

Elektro-Skateboard-wo-darf-man-fahren

In the USA, there are different laws from state to state. In some states, such as California, electric skateboards are permitted. In other states such as Florida, petitions are still being fought for.

Australia has also made progress. Here, e-boarders are classified as pedestrians. They are not allowed to ride them on main roads, but in parks, on pedestrian paths or in traffic-calmed zones.

In Sweden, electric longboards are classified as bicycles. There are only a few speed restrictions.

In Singapore, you are allowed to ride up to 15 km/h on footpaths and up to 25 km/h on cycle paths. However, not on roads.
